As usual when I get a new technological gadget, I had to explore it. A bit of googling provided the answers I needed: apparently this device had a different password every day and I found a couple of pages with a list of passwords of the day, as well as a page with a password generator no longer available for the TMA model which seemed to work fine for the TMA.
So I brought the matter into my own hands and I wrote my own arris password of the day generator. You can use the online generator to generate one or more passwords. You can use my Android application. Pull requests are welcome!
If you want the password for the current day, just call arrispwgen with no arguments:. To get the password for a given day, pass arrispwgen the date for which you want the password. For example:. In case you need to use a custom seed you can pass the --seed or -s argument:. This is a list of known modems for which this password generator generates valid passwords. If you know other models that work, please let me know in the comments below. The first and simplest is to check the date on your modem.
The second simplest thing is only an option if your modem asks for a username and a password. You can try the known default passwords for Arris modems.
You can also try using T! Some modems might be tricked into using the default seed for their password generator if you disconnect the coaxial cable and reboot your modem. Give that one a try. One detail about this technique is that since your modem will be disconnected from the internet, you might not be able to do much with it.
The last option is the tricky one, and involves fiddling with a command line and some more advanced tools. If none of the above options worked, or if your modem just asks for a password of the day without any username, chances are your ISP changed the password generator seed in your modem. Some time ago I found an exploit that works for getting the admin interface password from the modem and it might also work for getting the seed.Perfect for low-bandwidth households.

If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Arris modems seem to be notorious for not working well with external routers.
One reason, some of the Arris modems already have a built in router. These modems can't be bridged like DSL modems.Installing and Activating Your DOCSIS 3.1 SURFboard Cable Modem
This will help bypass any Arris modem management and processing and should open up everything to the external router. I have seen some cases that ISPs lock down the Arris modems web page from users. Is some cases, changing out the Arris modem for a different mfr modem is preferred, depending upon if the ISP allow customers to bring there own modem or not and if a customer has Voice Phone services thru there ISP which requires the use of Arris modems.
In some cases the Arris modems are stand alone modems with out any built in router. In some cases, most of these modems can be connected to external routers and do work well with out any problems.
Then some cases we've seen some odd behavior between the Arris modem and external routers that seem to have no resolution. Something thats just not compatible or seems to be an ISP issue. In these cases general connections should work if the Arris modem connects to the external router. Sometimes MAC Cloning can be used on the external router to make the connection work well between the Arris modem and external router. Other troubleshooting may need to be one with the ISP. Shortest length possible is preferred.
Sometimes line signal levels from the ISP service box to the customer building needs to be checked. Also using TV line splitters will lower line levels to the ISP Modem thus making the entire system not work well and makes customer think it's the routers fault when the problem lies upstream from the router and with the ISP service, lines and modem.
Check for t. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.
Over all, if you can avoid using Arris modems as your ISP modem and use something else is preferred.
If the Arris modem and external router are connecting and working well for you then you should be good to go. Just be aware of the above mentioned items.

The default password for the SSH user "root" is "arris. While the researcher was analyzing the backdoor, he discovered that there was another backdoor inside the first backdoor. Once accessed, a full busybox session is opened, giving the attackers even more capabilities.
Rodrigues was asked by the vendor not to disclose the password generating algorithm, but he didn't think this will do much to slow down attackers, considering the extent of the vulnerabilities in these Arris cable modems. Rodrigues believes that if modem software can't be open sourced so everyone could audit the software in their modems, as Vint Cert and others recently suggestedthen researchers should at least be allowed to reverse-engineer modem firmware.
This way, white hat security experts could find and help fix more security issues in our modems without being potentially liable to lawsuits against them by the modem companies who don't want their vulnerabilities exposed. This is pretty negligent on the part of ARRIS; however, at least there are some good natured and intelligent people out there to catch things like this and elicit change. Get a Zoom modem. They seem to work better than Motorola or Arris modems. Is there anything that can be done, in the meantime, for those of us with one of these modems? I have no money to replace a cable modem, and I doubt TWC will issue me a new one because this one isn't secure. I am an engineer for a US top ten cable company, and we were given access to the firmware fix for this issue before this article was even posted.
The amount of fear mongering in this post is disappointing. Arris came to us and told us themselves and then had the new firmware sent to us two days after. There will be some needed testing of the firmware, but the article is completely wrong about saying Arris hasn't acknowledged or worked to fix this. Unbeknownst to most people, cable modems and other broadband modems have diagnostic and logging functions built in, just like routers. While some people do occasionally peek at the control panel of their router, very few people ever look at their modems—or even realize they can do so.
So why look at the diagnostic page and logs of your cable modem in the first place? Or maybe your internet connectivity drops out intermittently and no amount of tinkering with your router has solved your problems. By accessing the tiny little web server hidden inside your modem and reading the diagnostic pages, you can learn a ton of things about your modem and connection like general status, signal strength, and event history via the system log.
We want to emphasize that last part. In order to not interfere with the common address pools that are doled out by residential routers such as X and Not all modems use the exact same address, but many do. There you can narrow your search down by brand and model number to find the address of your modem and any default login information you may need.
Once you have access to the diagnostic panel, there are some basic things you want to look at: the modem status, signal strength, and the activity log. While there may be additional pages to investigate like the general configuration of the modemthese settings are generally not user-editable.
And even if they were, the settings are so arcane and ISP specific that they are of very little diagnostic use to most users.
Everything on the general status page should look positive. The other very important thing to look at on the main status page is the system up time. The up time should reflect your experience with the modem. If you reset the modem by power cycling it four days ago, then the up time should reflect four days and change worth of operation.
In the screenshot above, you can see the general status page for our modem. Everything looks great and the up time, although short, does reflect our interactions with the modem: after this new modem was provisioned a day ago we power cycled the device.
Modem logs are pretty arcane like most logs. You can always search online for specifics codes to get a clearer understanding of what is going on if need be.

If we look at the log of our modem, shown above, we can see that everything is currently super smooth sailing. Ideally, your log should be boring and you should see very little activity other than the time it boots up, a rare error here or there because no system is perfect and your modem will occasionally fail to connector a rare bit of downtime because your ISP pushed out new firmware. If a bad connection, splitters on the coaxial lines, or even old television amplifiers are dropping the signal below or pushing the signal above the operating range, then you may experience a connection problem.
But as a general rule, consider the following values when debating whether or not your physical lines and the connection to the provider are a problem.
